Samsung Unveils Galaxy S

Just as Apple (AAPL) unveiled its new iPhone 4 earlier this week, Samsung Electronics said it is launching the Galaxy S–its latest attempt to gain share in the profitable smart phone segment.

The Galaxy S, which runs on Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system in South Korea, is part of Samsung’s overall global push into the high-end handset segment. The Korean electronics giant, which is also the world’s second-largest maker of cellphones by shipments behind Nokia (NOK), hopes that Galaxy S will allow it to catch up with other smart phone makers, including Apple and Research In Motion (RIMM), after it lost some ground in the market with a lack of attractive line-ups and user-friendly devices.

The Galaxy S is 9.9 millimeters thick and features a 1-gigahertz CPU and a 4-inch AMOLED screen. It has a 5 megapixel camera and 16 gigabytes of memory storage. The touch-screen device also allows video calls, and users can tap into Google’s various applications including Gmail and YouTube.
